“Down by the wharf there’s a stone stacker man
picking up stones in the palm of his hand
build them up tall just to see ’em all fall
he is like a preacher and a teacher to us all”
Lyric excerpt from “Street of Longing” Gretha Ennew
Street of Longing
Pink Paper Walls
Recorded at AD Studio (Produced by Andy Downer) Lismore NSW in Autumn 2018. Original paintings by Gretha Ennew.
“The 4 songs here demonstrate a very wide range of stylistic influences with little sense of ‘pastiche’ – instead there’s a very strong thread – Gretha Ennews own voice coming through all the tracks, with lyrics that are complex and evocative.”
Matt Hill, Northern Rivers Academic & Musician
Stylistically, alternative indi folk / experimental pop, Gretha Ennew writes songs about the good, the bad & the smudgy – blending edge & elegance into her acoustic & synthesized music. As a painter, she is interested in multi media performance – especially via cyberspace. Her storytelling & music- making reflects her like of simple traditional folk music that is foundational to her innovative and contemporary signature.
Gretha Ennew (nee Oost) began performing at the Townsville Folk Club in the mid 70’s and began to gig, initially at The Miner’s Right. She later taught singing in schools & from a home studio for a decade in Central Qld, including promoting songwriting as accessible artistry, working with groups of children & adolescents. She conducted a secondary school choir, was a member of several folk-rock bands and has recorded as a backing vocalist.
